What’s Their Secret? MARY-JANE RILEY @mrsmjriley confesses! #HerLastSecret

To celebrate #HerLastSecret going on sale, I’ve asked authors to share their secrets with me… Today it’s MARY-JANE RILEY, author of After She Fell and The Bad Things.

Mary-Jane Riley wrote her first story on her newly acquired blue Petite typewriter. She was eight. It was about a gang of children who had adventures on mysterious islands, but she soon realised Enid Blyton had cornered that particular market. So she wrote about the Wild West instead. When she grew up she had to earn a living, and became a BBC radio talk show presenter and journalist. She has covered many life-affirming stories, but also some of the darkest events of the past two decades.

Then, in true journalistic style, she decided not to let the facts get in the way of a good story and got creative. She wrote for women’s magazines and small presses. She formed WriteOutLoud with two writer friends to help charities get their message across using their life stories. Now she is writing psychological suspense, drawing on her experiences in journalism.

THE BAD THINGS by Mary-Jane Riley is published by Harper Collins/Killer Reads. Her second book, AFTER SHE FELL, also published by Killer Reads, is out on April 28th.

In her spare time Mary-Jane likes to walk the dog and eat a lot. Good job she likes walking.

What’s Their Secret? HOLLY SEDDON @hollyseddon confesses! #HerLastSecret

To celebrate #HerLastSecret going on sale, I’ve asked authors to share their secrets with me… Today it’s HOLLY SEDDON, author of Try Not To Breathe and Don’t Close Your Eyes.

Holly Seddon is a full time writer, living slap bang in the middle of Amsterdam with her husband James and a house full of children and pets. Holly has written for newspapers, websites and magazines since her early 20s after growing up in the English countryside, obsessed with music and books.

Her first novel TRY NOT TO BREATHE was published worldwide in 2016 and became a national and international bestseller.

Her second novel DON’T CLOSE YOUR EYES was published in July 2017.

Secret writing ritual…

If I’m writing at home, nothing can start until I have a cup of tea in a big Le Creuset mug. I have a bunch of them, but my favourite is a matte blue (which I’m drinking tea from right now) and if that one’s clean and ready, I feel like I can get a lot more done.

Secret writing snack…

I try hard to eat healthily and I wish I could say that my secret writing snack is some kind of chai acai smoothie with spinach. But it isn’t. It’s white toast, slabs of butter and Marmite.

Secret celebration when you finish a WIP…

Take-away and a vat of wine.

‘Guilty secret’ read…

I’m not sure I read anything that I wouldn’t happily leave lying around… but I guess I do feel a bit guilty when I read something other than from my TBR pile, which is mostly proofs. I really love wrapping up in a blanket like a burrito and reading old Sherlock Holmes short stories. There are definitely no Arthur Conan Doyle proofs on my TBR pile.

‘Guilty secret’ tv programme…

‘Allo ‘Allo!

Shared secret… (tell us something we don’t know about you)

Gosh, I’m a pretty open book/blabbermouth so I’m not sure there’s much I’ve kept secret. Hmn. Okay, when I was about six, I went through a stage of thinking that all adults were part of a secret society of day vampires who communicated on walkie talkies when kids weren’t around and that’s how they always knew what you were up to. Probably no surprise I’ve gone on to write somewhat dark books…

Secret peek into your new WIP…

Well, I think the title is under wraps still and I’m yet to see the cover (hopefully any day soon!) but I can tell you that it’s something of a departure from the previous two, with familiar elements of course. It features the pleasure and pain of intense childhood friendships, the compromises and secrets of marriage and a lot of eighties and noughties references…

Here’s the opening line:

“Are you sure?” I ask.

I know that tells you very little, sorry!

Secret Santa… (If you could give a happy ending to any character who would it be, and what would you do?)

My own character would be Alex Dale from Try Not to Breathe. I’d love to see her achieve some personal contentment outside of her work. I picture her with a little dog in a cottage in the Kent countryside…

Someone else’s character would be Teddy from Life After Life and A God In Ruins by Kate Atkinson. I wept buckets over him in both books and, without wanting to give anything away, I wish he’d been born in a different decade and hadn’t had to fight in the war. Obviously that would also wreck both books…

THANKS FOR THOSE GREAT CONFESSIONS, HOLLY!

‘Hooked from the opening pages’ #bookreview of HER LAST SECRET via @boombaby13

‘Great gritty and dark psychological thriller’

Another early review is in for HER LAST SECRET, this time from Carrie’s Book Reviews, and it’s a thumbs up again! Carrie says she was ‘entranced’ by the tale, and gave it five stars.

It’s still very early days, with the book not being published until Friday 13th October (lucky for you, unlucky for the Thomas family) but so far there’s been such a wonderful response to it. Long may it continue!

Carrie’s love of reading started thanks to her grandmother. On her blog’s ‘About Me’ section, she shares a beautiful family story…

‘Our local library had only one requirement, you had to be able to sign your own name to sign your card. My grandmother taught me to do just that when I was only 3 years old so I could begin to check out my own books as she was always an avid reader herself and wanted to pass on the enjoyment of a good book to me,’ writes Carrie. ‘We would visit together every couple of weeks and each come home with our own stack of books. I’m sure she’s smiling down on me every time I pick up a book to read to this day.’

Carrie was inspired to start her blog when she realised the difference reviews make to people. ‘It helps so much to know what others have thought so I really thought I should begin writing my own reviews, so here we are,’ she explains.

So what did she think of Her Last Secret? She describes it as: ‘a trainwreck that you can’t take your eyes away from until you know all of the truth, and I stayed completely entranced until that moment came.

‘Great gritty and dark psychological thriller that had me hooked from the opening pages, and would certainly recommend checking this one out.’

Author/blogger meet-up #writerslife

Hanging out with fellow authors and amazing bloggers, chatting about the writing process, and our favourite books…what more could I ask for from a Saturday? I had such a brilliant time at an author/blogger event on Saturday, organised by the fabulous Kim Nash and Holly Martin.
I’m terrible at taking selfies, so apologies for the lack of photos, but here’s one of Kim with the incredibly talented and very lovely Louise Jensen – Fabricating Fiction, whose new book The Surrogate is out soon. We had a great talk about the writing process, and I came away from it feeling much more confident about things – thanks, Louise!
I’m also pictured with the living dynamo that is Noelle Holten, who is so passionate about books that she not only works at Bookouture and also runs amazing blog Crimebookjunkie Book Reviews: Crime Fiction.
There were so many incredible authors and bloggers there, so apologies for not mentioning them all by name, but it was brilliant to have the chance to meet them all. Some of the bloggers have already read Her Last Secret, so it took everything I’d got not to shine a light into their eyes and demand to know exactly what they thought of it. I’m just going to have to be patient – argh!

Bloggers and readers telling everyone they know about books they love makes a huge difference! Thank you, everyone! x

What’s Their Secret? BETSY REAVLEY @BetsyReavley confesses! #HerLastSecret

To celebrate #HerLastSecret going on sale, I’ve asked authors to share their secrets with me… Today it’s BETSY REAVLEY, author of psychological thrillers, including The Optician’s Wife, Frailty and many more.

Betsy Freeman Reavley is the author of the novels Beneath the Watery Moon, Carrion, The Quiet Ones, The Optician’s Wife, Frailty and the poetry collections The Worm in the Bottle and Shadows in the light. Her latest psychological thriller, Frailty, published by Bloodhound Books.
She was born in Hammersmith, London. As a child she moved around frequently with her family, spending time in London, Provence, Tuscany, Gloucestershire and Cambridgeshire.
She showed a flair for literature and writing from a young age and had a particular interest in poetry, of which she was a prolific consumer and producer.
In her early twenties she moved to Oxford, where she would eventually meet her husband. During her time in Oxford her interests turned from poetry to novels and she began to develop her own unique style of psychological thriller.
Reavley says “I think people are at their most fascinating when they are faced with life’s real horrors. This is what I love to write about.”
Betsy Reavley currently lives in Cambridge, with her husband, 2 children, dog and quail. She is working on her fifth novel.

Secret writing ritual…

I don’t actually have one. I write when I feel the need to and when my children and time permits. When I do get into the zone sometimes it can last for days, other times it is shorter. I try not to pressure myself to write, especially given the publishing business I am helping to run.

Secret writing snack…

Never eat while I’m writing. I puff away furiously at my electric cigarette and rely heavily on copious amounts of coffee though.

Secret celebration when you finish a WIP…

That’s easy – I sit down with my husband and open a bottle of bubbly!

‘Guilty secret’ read…

Again, sorry to disappoint but I don’t think I have one. As a teenager I used to read the cheesy Point Horror novellas from time to time but that’s about it. I rarely read anything other than crime and thrillers and, as a writer and publisher of the genre, I will not confess to them being guilty.

‘Guilty secret’ TV programme…

EastEnders. I have a love hate relationship with the programme but when it’s gripping I am a total sucker and look forward to the next episode with glee.

Shared secret…

Hmm. I have a slightly unhealthy fascination with birds, particularly corvids. I rescued a baby magpie, which I called Pica, the Latin for Magpie. Being in the company of such an intelligent creature was a real honour and only exacerbated my captivation. Sadly the young bird did not make it to adulthood. I cried for a week.

Secret peek into your new WIP…

Leading on from the last question, my current WIP, which is coming along particularly slowly, is called Only Birds Sing. The story follows a killer who has an obsession with birds. Well, they say it’s always best to write about what you know… and I’m referring to the obsession with birds, of course.

Secret Santa… (If you could give a happy ending to any character who would it be, and what would you do?)

If I could give a happy ending to a character it would be Miss Haversham from the Dickens’ novel Great Expectations. She was a miserable, bitter, heartbroken woman. I always felt so sorry for her. All she wanted was love. That is something every person should have in life, whatever form it may take. If I had to rewrite it I’d have the man who left her at the aisle reappear in her life, beg her forgiveness and whisk her off into the sunset, long before she ends up burning to death in a fire.

THANKS FOR THOSE GREAT CONFESSIONS, BETSY!

There are some secrets you can never tell.

The last thing to go through Dominique Thomas’s head was the image of her teenage daughter’s face and her heart lifted. Then the shot rang out.

They were the perfect family. Successful businessman Ben Thomas and his wife Dominique live an enviable life, along with their beautiful children; teenager Ruby and quirky younger daughter, Mouse.

But on Christmas Day the police are called to their London home, only to discover a horrific scene; the entire family lying lifeless, victims of an unknown assailant.

But when Ruby’s diary is discovered, revealing her rage at the world around her, police are forced to look closer to home for the key to this tragedy.

Each family member harboured their own dark truths – but has keeping their secrets pushed Ruby to the edge of sanity? Or are there darker forces at work?

This dark, gripping psychological thriller will have you holding your breath until the very last page. Fans of Behind Closed Doors, Sometimes I Lie, and The Girl on the Train will be captivated.

What’s Their Secret? LESLEY M. KRIER TITHER @tottielimejuice confesses! #HerLastSecret

WHAT'S THEIR SECRET.jpeg

To celebrate #HerLastSecret going on sale, I’ve asked authors to share their secrets with me… Today it’s LESLEY M. KRIER TITHER, author of the DCI Ted Darling series and much more.

Lesley M. Krier Tither is a retired journalist, freelance copywriter and copy editor who also worked for the Crown Prosecution Service. She now lives in central France’s Auvergne region and holds French nationality. She writes crime fiction as L M Krier, travel memoirs and humour as Tottie Limejuice and children’s fiction with a crime twist as L M Kay. She is a proud Indie author and has refused an approach from a publisher to remain so. When not writing she enjoys walking and camping with her rescued border collies, Fleur and Rosie. She is also owned by two cats, HRH the Princess Freddie Mercury and her lady-in-waiting Bibi.

Secret writing ritual…

Open laptop, start to type! Honestly, it’s as boring as that. I’ve written for a living for such a large part of my life it’s become just what I do. I do scribble lots of notes on old envelopes randomly scattered all over my desk and I do have a thing about not changing the colour of ink I’m using, so I have been known to turn the house upside down to find a pen with just the right shade of blue ink before I continue.

Secret writing snack…

I’ve recently splashed out and bought myself a rather nice, expensive new laptop so I’m trying to be strict. Nothing which will clog up the keyboard with crumbs. So the only food I allow myself at my desk is almonds, which are my favourite healthy nibble.

Secret celebration when you finish a WIP…

Actually, as soon as I finish one I plunge into deep pits of gloom and despondency for some reason. It’s because I really do love writing and always feel I don’t quite know what to do with myself once I stop. Having two very lively rescued border collies is a big help, though. They are always ready, willing and able, armed with tennis balls, for a bit of fun and frolics.

‘Guilty secret’ read…

Hmm, that’s a tricky one as I have no shred of guilt about anything! I have read all the Harry Potters, if that counts. And I fully intend, one day, to read 50 Shades, purely for research purposes, although not with any degree of enthusiasm.

‘Guilty secret’ tv programme…

I used to be an regular Coronation Street watcher. As my crime books are set in Greater Manchester (Stockport, to be precise, which is not far away) I found they were sometimes helpful with ideas. Lately it has changed beyond all recognition and tries too hard to emulate East Enders. I’m actually watching less and less television but I have become completely addicted to a very long-running French wartime drama series, Un Village Français. Seven seasons of it, mostly six episodes a season. I bought the box set and I could now bore for Britain about it. I just have one episode left to watch, after which I may well need therapy.

Shared secret…

That’s another tall order! As I write memoirs – as Tottie Limejuice, the Sell the Pig trilogy of 5; yes, I always was rubbish at sums – and as they are very frank, there is little left to reveal. However, on a serious note, I’d say that because I have an ironic sense of humour and a very sarky tongue, people tend to misjudge me. What people probably don’t know about me is that although I’m not rich (few authors are, apart from JK) I do like to do little Secret Santa things for people I think deserve something nice and can’t afford it. And whenever I can I give to homeless charities and things like the Trussell Trust as I hate to think of people being hungry or cold when I’m not.

Secret peek into your new WIP…

I’ve just finished DI Ted Darling Book 8, Preacher Man. It is due out literally any day now but my poor formatter is ill in hospital so I’m a bit stuck. I am hugely superstitious about releasing anything before publication date but just for you, here’s the cover blurb:

A teenager is found naked and wandering in a lane near Stockport. He can’t answer any questions about the serious injuries he’s sustained, only repeatedly recite a biblical passage.

DCI Ted Darling’s team take the case and discover he’s been missing for six months – and he’s not the only young person to have suffered the same fate.

Ted’s tied up in an important court case where the father of the young defendant seems prepared to stop at nothing to bring the case crashing down around him. It doesn’t help when he’s told his team must lose a member and Ted has to choose who it will be.

Whoever the kidnapper is, he seems to have a set timetable for his abductions. Can Ted catch him before he strikes again?

Secret Santa… (If you could give a happy ending to any character who would it be, and what would you do?)

Oh that’s an easy one! Lenny, in Of Mice and Men. He’d definitely get to tend the rabbits, if I had my way.

THANKS FOR THOSE GREAT CONFESSIONS, LESLEY!

Her Last Secret FINAL

I’m in the in-between place, where HER LAST SECRET is available on pre-order, and is in the hands of reviewers who are reading it, but it hasn’t yet been published. All I can do is wait, rather nervously, for the verdicts to come rolling in – and one early review is from the wonderful Stardust Book Reviews

And I’m so thrilled and relieved to reveal it is fabulous 5* review!

First, let me tell you a little about Stardust Reviews. According to the ‘About Me’ section, it’s run by Sharon, who works in a library and has been a huge book fan for as long as she can remember – and now she uses her job and blog to spread that passion.

“Reading takes me to places that I wouldn’t ever be able to go to! There is nothing better than curling up with a good book and getting lost in the moment,” she says. “I love the books that you just don’t want to end.  You read slowly so you can make it last, but you want to read it faster to find out what happens.

“I love to use my knowledge of books to recommend library users different books. I see people browsing through the shelves, not knowing what to pick, and I go up and say “try this one” or “this might be for you” and they then come back weeks later and thank you for suggesting such a good book!  My work is done and I’m happy!”

I feel so proud that someone with such extensive knowledge, and incredible love of books and crime thrillers, has given HER LAST SECRET the thumbs up.

Stardust Reviews says of the psychological thriller: “The story of Dominique and her family twisted and turned so much it made me feel giddy!”

She adds: “The suspense built up slowly from the beginning, given you chance to think you knew where it was going before it hit you and turned you down a new path.

The best is saved for last, though! “A great rollercoaster of a story!! Wow, wow, wow!! Five stars!!”
